FAQs
Get answers to the most common questions about cycling accident claims in the UK. My Cycle Claim explains everything you need to know.
How long do I have to make a cycling accident claim?
In most cases, you have three years from the date of the accident to begin a personal injury claim. If the injured person was a child, the three-year period begins on their 18th birthday. We strongly recommend contacting us as early as possible to preserve evidence and build the strongest case.
Do I need to have a police report to make a claim?
A police report can strengthen your claim significantly, but it is not always essential. We can advise you on how to proceed depending on the evidence available in your specific circumstances.
What if the accident was partly my fault?
If you were partly responsible for the accident, your compensation may be reduced to reflect your contribution — this is known as contributory negligence. However, a partial contribution does not prevent you from making a claim entirely. Even if you were 50% responsible, you may still recover 50% of the full compensation value.
How long does a cycling accident claim take?
Straightforward claims where liability is admitted early can often be resolved within a few months. More complex cases involving disputed liability or serious injuries may take longer. My Cycle Claim will give you a realistic timeline at the outset and keep you updated throughout.
What if the driver was uninsured or didn’t stop?
You may be able to claim through the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB). This body was set up to compensate victims of uninsured and hit-and-run drivers. My Cycle Claim can manage this type of claim on your behalf.
Will I have to go to court?
The vast majority of cycling accident claims are resolved through negotiation and never go to court. However, if a fair settlement cannot be reached, we will support you through court proceedings if necessary.
Is there any risk to me in making a claim?
With our No Win, No Fee agreement, there is no financial risk to you. If your claim is unsuccessful, you pay nothing. We will always be transparent about the terms of our agreement before we proceed.
What happens to my bike while the claim is being processed?
My Cycle Claim can arrange for your bike to be repaired or replaced upfront — before your claim is settled. You should not have to wait months to get back on the road.
